IN an article on this subject, published in the February issue of Aircraft Engineering this year. Wing Commander L. J. Wackett suggests that an aeroplane must fly at an appreciable angle of yaw in order to counteract the torque of the engine and airscrew. He gives an approximate formula for calculating this angle of yaw, and describes a series of experiments which appear to confirm his calculation. Since the angle of yaw suggested by this investigation is surprisingly large and would have serious effects on navigation and gunnery, I have made a closer examination of the problem. This analysis has led me to doubt the validity of Wing Commander Wackett's conclusions, since the calculated angle of yaw is negligibly small if the torque is balanced by use of the ailerons and if the aeroplane is maintained on a level keel.
This work presents a technique for measuring ultra-low power oscillator signals using an adaptive drift cancellation method. We demonstrate this technique through spectrum measurements of a sub-pW nano-magnet spin torque oscillator (STO). We first present a detailed noise analysis of the standard STO characterization apparatus to estimate the background noise level, then compare these results to the noise level of three measurement configurations. The first and second share the standard configuration but use different spectrum analyzers (SA), an older model and a state-of-the-art model, respectively. The third is the technique proposed in this work using the same old SA as for the first. Our results show that the first and second configurations suffer from a large drift that requires ~30 min to stabilize each time the SA changes the frequency band, even though the SA has been powered on for longer than 24 h. The third configuration introduced in this work, however, shows absolutely no drift as the SA changes frequency band, and nearly the same noise performance as with a state-of-the-art SA, thus providing a reliable method for measuring very low power signals for a wide variety of applications.

Stochastic dynamics of spin torque oscillators can be described in terms of magnetization drift and diffusion over a current-dependent effective energy surface given by the Fokker-Planck equation. Here we present a method that directly probes this effective energy surface via time-resolved measurements of the microwave voltage generated by a spin torque oscillator. We show that the effective energy approach provides a simple recipe for predicting spectral linewidths and line shapes near the generation threshold. Our time domain technique also accurately measures the fieldlike component of spin torque in a wide range of the voltage bias values.
Abstract: A space vector pulse width modulated (SV-PWM) direct torque controlled (DTC) induction motor drive, having reduced torque ripple even at low operating speeds and maintaining constant switching frequency has been studied and implemented with a modified stator flux estimation scheme. It utilises a compensator for the phase and magnitude error introduced by low pass filter, which is being used to avoid DC drift, problem of saturation and to enhance the transient response of the machine. Detailed simulation studies are carried out to verify the efficacy of the system. The viability of the scheme is confirmed by performing detailed experimental studies.
Abstract: A robust torque, flux and speed controllers design method for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive is introduced in this paper. A simple algorithm is illustrated to adjust the parameters of torque, flux and speed controllers. This mini-max optimisation problem is solved using Particle Swarm Optimisation approach (PSO). The solution thus attained is global optimal and robust. The proposed technique discards common problems in conventional Direct Torque Control (DTC) including; torque ripples, resistance change effect, low speed and integration drift. Also it is represented by fast tracking capability, deadbeat responses, and robust to load disturbances and low speed operation.
